Manhattan runs about 21 kilometres north to south, and its neighbourhoods change character block by block: vertical, touristy Midtown around Times Square and the Empire State Building; the low-rise, bohemian Village below 14th Street; SoHo's cast-iron shopping blocks; and Harlem's brownstones and jazz history further uptown.
