Things to do on Long Island
Long Island stretches more than 190km east from Manhattan, starting with Brooklyn and Queens at its western tip before opening into Nassau and Suffolk counties. The Long Island Rail Road runs from Penn Station and Grand Central Madison, with one-way fares of roughly $10-20 depending on the zone.
Jones Beach, a public beach with paid parking, is about 45 minutes to an hour away by car or a train-plus-shuttle combination; the North Fork wineries lie two hours or more from Manhattan.
Without a car, movement between sites is largely limited to LIRR stations and their immediate surroundings, so a single day trip should target one area, not several.
